Hawks win OMHA title
Friday March 27 2009

For 17 Caledon hockey players, the memories of their 2009 March Break will go well beyond the usual sleeping-in and enjoying a week away from school.
The Caledon Peewee AE Hawks, many of whom participated in an Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship run one year ago, are on their way back to the OMHA’s Parade of Champions.
Scott Andrews’ team capped a wonderful playoff ride with a 5-1 victory over the Whitby Wildcats in front of a horn-blowing, hand-clapping, sign-waving full house performing its own March madness at Mayfield Recreation Complex. With the win, the Hawks swept the Peewee AE Group 1 championship series in three straight games and is the lone Caledon club to capture an OMHA title this season.
After a scoreless first period, the Wildcats opened the scoring for the second game in a row when they poked home a rebound. Brady Simpson drew the hosts even when he whipped a shot into the Wildcats’ goal. Nathan Doig scored what would be the series-deciding goal by finishing off a nifty passing play with Braeden Bayes and Michael Andrews. Doig scored his second of the game moments later, sliding home a postcard-pretty goalmouth feed from Frankie Tamburini, who knocked down a loose puck and eluded a Whitby defenseman with some deft stick-handling. Michael Marinaccio collected his seventh assist of the series.
With the mostly pro-Hawks crowd sensing victory and getting louder as the clock ticked down to zero, the locals put the game out of reach in the third period with a couple of goals. Michael Andrews made it 4-1 with a lovely scoring touch around the goal crease. Bayes and Mario D’Acunto drew assists. Bayes concluded the scoring with a 30-foot wrist shot over the right shoulder of the falling Whitby netminder.
Doucette, who with Nathan Small gave the Hawks outstanding goalkeeping throughout the playoffs, was mobbed by his teammates at the final buzzer. An OMHA representative, along with Caledon Rep Hockey Association vice-president Glen Davis, presented team captain D’Acunto and assistants Stefan Cambouris, Braeden Glendinning and Brady Simpson with the Bill Leask trophy. Each player received gold medals and ball caps with “Champions” emblazoned across the front.
The win was the 17th in 22 post-season outings for the Hawks. They saved their best hockey of the season for their championship run by outscoring the Southpointe Stars and Whitby 38-9 in the semi-final and final rounds, after needing wins in sudden-death games to defeat both the Ancaster Avalanche and Oakville Rangers just to qualify as the Tri-County league representative.
The members of the OMHA-title team are: head coach Scott Andrews; assistant coaches Wayne Glendinning and Steve McAllister; trainer Al Doig; managers James Bayes and Emma Palumbo; goaltenders Nathan Small and Nicholas Doucette; defensemen Stefan Cambouris; Greg Johnstone; Zachary Gouveia; Ben McAllister; Braeden Glenndinning and Alex Palumbo; and forwards Mario D’Acunto; Michael Andrews; Braeden Bayes; Nathan Doig; J.P. Amaral; Nicholas Warias; Brady Simpson; Michael Marinaccio and Frankie Tamburini. The team’s title sponsors are Revive Fitness and Just Catering 4 Kids.

Letter to the Editor - Caledon Enterprise

Hawks victorious
Wednesday April 15 2009

I would like to express my sincere congratulations and thanks to the 94 Caledon Hawks Major Bantam AA 2008-2009 Tri-county Champions.  This season, each and every one of the players has proven to be a true champion in their very own special way.  They have not only claimed victory in their final game versus Ancaster, but they have proven to be victorious throughout the entire season. Their dedication, hard work, spirit and passion for the sport was clearly evident.  The players have all proven that the joining of forces as a TEAM is the foundation of success.  Job well done boys, and as quoted by one of our parents, “you are the true heroes.” May this victorious season be instilled with you, may your passion and spirit for the sport of hockey be in your hearts forever and may you carry the same passion and team spirit in the success of your future careers, endeavors and lives.

I would also like to extend my congratulations and thanks to the coaching staff (Head-Coach) Sonny Sampson; (Assistant Coach) Eddie DelRizzo; (Team Trainer) John Spadafora and (Mgr) Cathy Legaspi-Sampson, for their time and dedication for which is greatly appreciated.
A very special thank you to: all the parents for sacrificing their lives strictly to hockey; to all the siblings, families and friends who have shown a tremendous amount of support whether it was for their brothers, grandchildren, nephews, cousins or friends; to the sponsors; to the parent reps; to the Caledon community, who came out to support our boys; to Revive Fitness; to the past coaches and players and to the Caledon Hawks Hockey League.
The joining of forces of our children, parents, families, teachers, coaches and the community - this is what a team is all about.  I am truly honoured and proud to say that I am a Caledon resident. After all, our community is made up of one team, where our children come first.
On a personal note, I wish to express my gratitude to all those parents for their positive support and enlightening words of wisdom. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I am a true believer that things really do happen for a reason.
